Star Wreck is pretty familiar stuff to many people already, so this time around, the focus is on Energia’s next feature film, Iron Sky. FINNCON 2007 – 14-15 July 2007 (Jyväskylä, Finland)

According to rumours, his imperial highness Emperor Pirk has been invited to open the Finncon science fiction event! Later, there will be discussion about the future of Finnish filmmaking, as well as 45 minutes dedicated to Iron Sky. Both fact and fiction will be discussed, plus of course, the thoughts of the production team at this point.

ASSEMBLY 2007 – 2-5 August 2007 (Helsinki, Finland)

The largest computing event in Scandinavia, Assembly Summer, is again set to blow everyone’s sleep cycles to bits. The three sleepless nights will be brightened by the Energia crew with their merchandise and meeting stall. Come join us at the Raven Lounge, chat with the Ugly Guys Who Make a Difference, and replenish your stock of Star Wreck products. There will also be a seminar presentation where we tell you everything we can about Iron Sky.

ROPECON 2007 – 10-12 August 2007 (Espoo, Finland)

Ropecon, the roleplaying con, has always been close to our collective hearts, both as an event and an audience. It was where we first showed the Star Wreck trailer in 2003, and where the Star Wreck Roleplaying Game was released last year! This year, Energia lands among the roleplayers with stories of Iron Sky, tin-foil hat theories, and Moon Nazis.

EUROCON 2007 – 21-23 September 2007 (Copenhagen, Denmark)

So as not to neglect our Nordic friends, the Star Wreck messenger Timo Vuorensola joins the science fiction and fantasy con featuring (among others) Anne McCaffrey and Harry Harrison, to spread the word about Star Wreck and Iron Sky – and here, too, Imperial Edition is part of the programme.

So, do as Pirk did: go there, and destroy any enemies!

Kiitos tämän viimeaikaisen kohun (Romanifoorumi haluaa romanien tekemän Manne-TV:n pois ruudusta rasistisena - Yle käyttäytyy ylimielisesti ja suostuu vaihtamaan nimen) täytyi viime viikonlopun jakso katsoa.

Nämä negatiiviset puolet on käsitelty kuoliaaksi jo kaikkialla, joten ajattelin tuoda esille positiivisiakin puolia:

Ensinnäkin, Ylelle pisteet siitä, ettei se anna ulkopuolisen arvostelun vaikuttaa ohjelmapolitiikkaansa. Kun komediasarjoja aletaan sensuroida loukkaavina, niin sen jälkeen meillä ei ole South Parkia, Uutisvuotoa tai Reinikaista (saati sitten Siskoa ja sen Veljeä, jossa mm. vammaisia kohdellaan ihan vaan ihmisinä ja nauretaan tekopyhille hyysääjille). Komedian pidää saada koetella hyvän maun rajoja ja ylittää ne, se on sen tehtävä.

Toiseksi, romanifoorumi syyttää Romano-TV:tä (os. Manne-TV) stereotypioita lujittavaksi. Tämä ei pidä paikkaansa. Romanit on usein mielletty hevosmiesten ja ennustajien lisäksi nimenomaan viihdyttäviksi. Jakson katsoneena voin sanoa, että tätä stereotypiaa vastaan Manne-TV taistelee ansiokkaasti - se ei ole vähäisissäkään määrin viihdyttävä.

Kaiken rehellisyyden nimissä kuitenkin vielä papukaijamerkki tekijöille hyvistä aikomuksista. Huumori on erinomainen keino käsitellä ennakkoluuloja. Hyvä, että sitä opetellaan pikkuhiljaa täällä Suomessakin. Ehkä vielä jonain päivänä tulee se Ähläm Sählämin ja Manne-TV:n henkinen jälkeläinen, joka onnistuu olemaan oikeasti hauska.

I found myself spending most of the saturday watching the world’s longest, biggest and whatever superlatives you can come up with concert Live Earth, a 24-hour huge event set up by Al Gore and Kevin Wall. The main aim of the concert was to gain attention towards the climate crisis Earth is facing, and I think it succeeded pretty well. Most of the bands performed at least reasonably well considering how big an event it was and how many artists were playing on the stage after each other.

Most of the show I watched on a stream from MSN (where quality was obviously bad), but also on our TV as well (and no, I don’t have digibox). Too bad YLE thought that horseracing and mobile games had more important message than Live Earth did (and I was amazed what kind of an idiot extravaganza they had called to the studio as commentators…), so there was only small fraction of the concert on Finnish national TV.
Between the bands there was a set of short films from 60 directors which offered a different kind of ways to deliver the message. Many of them were either boring or too educational, but some of them were able to shine above the rest with a humoristic approach or just plain good idea. Good news, dear friends!
The release of Star Wreck on the Internet didn’t go out unnoticed - we’ve heard that we’ve inspired a lot of filmmakers also to release their productions for free. To get more quality films out there for much wider public audience does echo the message we in our own way started and keep on repeating: Internet is not an enemy, but a very strange and powerful friend you must learn to know better, and after you’ve done so - there’s nothing that can stop you. (Sounds like a line from a cheap ninja movie - and, as we all know, there’s nothing better than a cheap ninja movie!)

However, I don’t want to go on and steal the show, since the reason I’m writing now is that a fellow Wrecker Tianyi Pan and his mates took two years and made a feature film called Graffiti Within - and today they are following the our footsteps and releasing it on the Internet for free distribution. This is great news in so many ways, but the most important thing is that this actually is a very good film (and so do think also the fine folk at Ã…rhus Festival of Independent Arts, where the film won the whole festivals).

The guys sent me the DVD almost half a year ago and I didn’t get the time to watch it until few months ago - and I absolutely fell in for the film. The synopsis states the following:

Misty Friday Films’s debut movie GRAFFITI WITHIN tells a story about Jake, who moves into capital city Helsinki and meets up with his childhood friend, Toni. The winsome threesome is complete, as Jake brings his best friend, Erika with him. However, the summer they thought is going to be the best ever turns out tragically, as one of them harbours a painful secret.

What will happen between Jake and Erika when Jake finds a ladyfriend in Helsinki? What can you do when your best friend is a girl? How problematic is to first spend a night with your girlfriend and then go sleep next to a girl friend? How much do friends change in ten years? Is anything going to stay same, when Toni is haunted by his past?

It’s a very believeable youth film, a good drama with good comedy elements and a nice rolling story, some pretty convincing actors and the director Miika Ullakko has a good grip of the film overall. What I specifically liked about the film was the atmosphere they managed to create around it.

Go check out the film, it’s certainly worth it, and the guys are on our side! And always remember - if you like what you see, get the DVD. It’s not too expensive, but will hopefully help the guys to keep on making more good stuff for you. And no, this is not a paid commercial - I just feel strongly for the cause and I’m happy to see that our ideology actually does have a following behind.

Ps. no subtitles as far as I understood yet for the film (the film is in Finnish), but hopefully they’ll get them up soon too. Also, not yet at least a quality download available (only a streaming video), but I’m convinced that they are working on it as well (and then again, there’s the DVD with the best quality for that).

Minulla on pienenä ollut tasan yksi Transformers -lelu, eikä piirretystä ole minkäänlaista muistikuvaa. Mutta koska olen nörtti, niin Transformers -elokuva on pakkokatsottavaa jo ihan isojen robottien takia.

Jättirobottimättöä onkin annosteltu reippaan kokoisella lumikolalla, mutta onneksi ei sen suuremmilla maansiirtovälineillä. Oikeastaan Transformersissa on kaikkea mitä poika voi toivoa ja vähintään riittävästi. Ainoastaan pituutta on Michael Baylle tuttuun tyyliin liikaa. Kuten Pirates of the Caribbeanin jatko-osat, Bad Boys II ja moni muu nykyelokuva, niin Transformers olisi voinut hyvin olla tunnin lyhyempi. Nimenomaan voisi olla, sillä tylsäksi sekään ei ehdi käydä, kyse on enemmän liian isosta karkkipussista.

Leffana Transformers on tämän vuosikymmenen merkkipaalu. Vaikka kyseessä onkin 80-luvun piirretyn uudelleenlämmittely, Transformers on niin tiukasti ajassa kiinni, että 30 vuoden kuluttua siinä riittää niin nostalgoitavaa tämän päivän lapsille kuin tutkittavaa antropologien armeijalle. Oikeastaan koko idea vanhan tv-hutun muuttamisesta jättielokuviksi on itsessään hyvin 2000-lukulainen juttu. Samoin kuin elokuvan asenteet lähi-itää kohtaan ja X-Filesin ajoilta juontuva paranoia salaisista virastoista. Myöskin Yhdysvaltain armeijaa fetisöidään niin parhaina Ronald Raygunin aikoina, sotilaiden ollessa Autobottien kaltaisia suoraselkäisiä suojelijoita ja lasten ystäviä.

Jenkkiarmeijan tekijöille antama tuki näkyy niin asenteina kuin mahtavina maasotakohtauksina. Esimerkiksi ilmatuen kutsuminen taistelukentälle esitetään huomattavasti realistisemmin kuin morsetus. Jos tätä elokuvaa uskotaan, helpoin tapa käyttää 40-vuotiasta radiota morsetukseen on modata siihen ruuvimeisselillä kiinni tietokone ja kirjoittaa lennosta ohjelma joka esittää morsekoodin graafisesti. Mutta mitäpä sen väliä, kun sotakohtauksissa päästään näkemään Hercules C-130 -koneen kylkeen pultattu 105-millinen haupitsi tositoimissa.

Armeijan lisäksi myöskin useat monikansalliset yritykset tuotemerkkeineen esiintyvät elokuvassa positiivisessa valossa. Pisimmän korren vetään General Motors, jonka autot ovat kirjaimellisesti pääosassa. Bumblebee on (tietävämpien kavereiden mukaan) muuttunut piirrettyjen sympaattisesta Kuplasta uudeksi urheiluautoksi. Uusi Camaro onkin varmasti jokaisen pojan (ja aika usean tytön) toivelistalla. Kukapa ei haluaisi urheiluautoa, joka muuttuu jättimiseksi taistelurobotiksi ja on uskollinen kuin paraskin paimenkoira? Myöskin Nokialle on varattu paras tuotesijoittelukohtaus ikinä.

Mikä tekee Transformersista hyvän leffan on se, että kaiken hölmöyden, naiviuden ja typeryyden antaa anteeksi siksi, että se on vain niin kertakaikkisen hauskaa katsottavaa. Loistava kesäleffa ja vuoden paras syy paeta hellettä ilmastoituun saliin. Tätä ei pidä vähätellä, sillä se ei voi olla vahinko. Hyvin pitkälti samat kommentit pätivät jo Bayn ohjaamaan Bad Boys 2:n, joka oli helvetin viihdyttävä leffa vaikkakin sen tunnin verran liian pitkä.
