They don't NEED to be.. why not place them UNDER the picture? This probably wouldn't be possible in the theater, but for dvds it should atleast be an option, where televisions/monitors rarely fit the film aspect ratio perfectly. Whenever i watch a (ripped)movie with seperate plaintext subtitles (.srt, .sub, etc..) i have them offset to the bottom of the screen, and they are much easier to read from there aswell. Also.. why are all theater film distribution subtitles so damn crappy looking? Like they've been written with a dirty white marker, regardless of the background color - hard to read off a white background On the topic of intruding subtitles;
