Iron Sky Shoot, Day 21 & 22: Moon Hoax

January 16th, 2011 by Timo Vuorensola

On Thursday we shot several scenes that take place on the corridors of Schwarze Sonne. For that, we had built only a portion of the floor, but decided to leave out most of the walls to be added later with CG, to be able to get more bang out of them. The floor was needed to be built since creating it out of green would make things look fake. Our general approach into set building is that if someone touches it physically, it will be built, but if it’s a background/foreground, we’ll do it with CG.

On Thursday, we crushed down a lot of stone on extras and stunts. Preparing that was great, and when you get to shoot it – you usually have only one or two takes of such bigger stunt/special effects shots. I find shooting in studio not as exciting as when you are really on location. In studio, you have mainly just green walls, and everything needs to be imagined – thus, the sets look less interesting on the day. They’ll turn into something beautiful eventually, but now, it’s just all in our heads.

On Friday, we went to the Moon. That means we moved to a new set, and started to create a moon landing sequence – actually, the one you can read and view in Sneak Peek. One thing Friday proves was that definitely the Americans landed on the Moon in 60s and 70s – creating the hoax would’ve just been too damn hard. We had long discussions over reference videos on how to get right kind of Moon walk (with wires), discussions over if you fall down on the Moon how does that work and how do you get up… It all took forever, so we were running really tight on time on Friday – luckily on Monday we have another day on the Moon, which gives us possibilities to shoot the material we missed on Friday.

On Saturday, we had a day off and we celebrated it by watching Crocodile Dundee! What a great film it was. We made some food with Tero and Mika at my apartment, and invited the crew living in the same hotel to join us.
