On Harm’s way – Iron Sky team heading to Hollywood

November 14th, 2012 by Rauli

We started out with a small Finnish Star Trek -parody. We followed it up with a big Finnish-German-Australian scifi Nazi comedy. And now it’s time to see how films are made in the Hollywood. Yes – that’s where we are headed, and we’d love to invite you alongside the journey!

But before going further, let me quickly tell you about a new friend of mine, Jeremiah Harm.

Jeremiah – you can call him Jerry, but he’ll probably rip your limbs off if you do – is a nasty guy with a bad attitude and a bolt-action rifle to back that up. He’s a human, but never really went to Earth. Born and raised in several intergalactic orphanaries with a bunch of aliens from all corners of the galaxy, he begun a career as a bounty hunter early, scoring his first kill before the age of 15. After that, the bodycount has been steadily rising, and by mid-30′s, he has basically hunted down every imaginable race in the galaxy – but not his own kind. See, he’s the only human around as far as he knows, until he is assigned to Earth, a planet claimed to be lost thousands of years ago. And of course he finds himself from New York, chasing a bunch of alien criminals and a girl they kidnapped from the Most Important Man In the Universe.

This much is clear, and pretty much everything else is still open. Yes, we are very early with the production, but our aim is to charge into the battle with all guns blazing, and we’d loved to have you guys join us on the ride. Crowdsourcing is back in the picture – we start by looking for 1 000 000 crowdsourced aliens to populate the world of Harm – and our journey will be documented in the form of Signals, Director’s Diaries and me being an avid Redditor myself, we’re planning to take much of the production to Reddit as well.

But before we rush on, let’s talk a few words about the team working on Jeremiah Harm. The whole story is based on a graphic novel by Alan Grant and Keith Giffen (they’ve worked on Lobo, Judge Dredd & Batman), and published by Boom! Studios. I’ve always loved Lobo, and Jeremiah Harm definitely has the same tone written all over it.

Producers are also rather interesting: Arnold Rifkin, a producer who made most of Bruce Willis’ films, as well as a bagful of other big hits, and Ross Ritchie, the man running Boom! Studios, quite possibly the most interesting comic book publisher out there (check out their catalog here, rather impressive I must say).

And of course, there’s us. Yes, Tero Kaukomaa of Blind Spot is producing, Samuli Torssonen and Jussi Lehtiniemi of Troll VFX on visuals – and I’m directing. And then there’s, of course, you.

We are hoping to extend our collaboration which we started successfully with you on Star Wreck and Iron Sky, and I think creating a full galaxy worth of aliens, cities, planets, laws of physics and what not, is probably even more rewarding than ever before!

And of course, there is a promo, just like we had with Iron Sky back in the very beginning. The idea of the promo is to define a bit of the world, the style and the look and atmosphere of the film. It’s of course just a promo, so not actual material from the film, but I think you’ll get the idea!

And, we made a new signal about it as well:

So, here we are again, on the doorsteps of another crazy journey. Come join Jeremiah Harm’s Facebook-page, Twitter account and Reddit account, and – most importantly – spread the word, and click here for to start crowdsourcing aliens with us!

PS. Want to get a bit of an idea of the upcoming film – check out the Jeremiah Harm comic books on Comixology, you’ll get an idea on what we are talking about!

Iron Sky fights for the prize of Best European Fantastic Film at Sitges!

October 1st, 2012 by Timo Vuorensola

Your friendly neighborhood Moon Nazi film IRON SKY is competing at Sitges International Film Festival for the Méliès d’Or prize, handed out every year to the best European Fantastic Film, among 8 other contestants. Iron Sky won the Silver Méliès prize at Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival this year (as well as the Audience Award). The Silver Méliès winners of this year’s competition are competing for the Golden Méliès at Sitges every year.

The list of competing films is interesting – starting with Kill List by Ben Wheatley, whom I got a chance to meet and see in Espoo Ciné last year to The Divide by Xavier Gens, with whom I’m attached at a episodical film Paris I’ll Kill You as one of the directors, not forgetting Vanishing Waves by lovely Kristina Buozyte, whom I had a privilege to get to know at European Film Festival Palic and later at Lund International Fantastic Film Festival, and who just won the Silver Méliès at Lund, the list is extensive and packed with amazing movies from all the corners of Europe. Iron Sky stands proudly among these films as a unique, epic scale science fiction action / political satire, and grabbing the golden Méliès would be a perfect ending for six years of ass-busting work and 8 months of health-jeopardizing release- and festival touring with the film! So join me crossing fingers, knocking wood, praying for the Great Old Ones and whatever you can do to push Iron Sky to the grand goal!

Iron Sky will be screened at Sitges on 5th and 6th of October; I will be present at the festival from 5th to 8th, so come and say hi if you are around!

EDIT: Unfortunately, we did not win this time – the winner was another amazing film, Vanishing Waves, directed by Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper. The whole Iron Sky team congratulates the winners of the Méliès Award of 2012! You friggin’ deserved it!

Back on the Tube!

September 28th, 2012 by Timo Vuorensola

The Iron Sky team in Finland is gearing up and getting ready to meet the future productions, and now, after a short hiatus, the Director’s Diaries are back, as well as the Iron Sky Signal. To those who don’t know what we are talking about, here’s a quick explanation:

DIRECTOR’S DIARY is a video blog of director Timo Vuorensola (that’s me), and the idea is to allow a window into the world of a more-or-less first time film director making his way through the sometimes muddy, sometimes neat process of film production. We’ve been doing Director’s Diaries, and before that Energia Dailies ever since 2008 I think, and they’ve always been great fun to make, and I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from people about them as well. The idea is to try to keep the production values as low as possible, so the blogging is easy, fast and extremely nimble. You can find all of the Director’s Diaries from here, and here’s the latest episode!

We’ve always used music from the fanbase, and since Director’s Diary is a thing I do on my own and basically just for fun, we’ve accustomed not to pay for the music, but we’ve always been trying to link the musicians as widely as possible to our couple of million followers over the Internet. This time, the music for this episode of Director’s Diaries is by an electronic musician Maurice Oeser from Berlin. More of his music here!

We are obviously developing Director’s Diaries as well, but I’d loved to hear your thoughts on how to make them better?

The bigger “juggernaut” of YouTube information content on our behalf is IRON SKY SIGNAL, a news program that’s hosted by me, and contains news, interviews from the people working in one way or another on Iron Sky or stuff around it. Signal is partially dedicated to inform you guys on what we are doing in a nicely wrapped format. We try to keep Signals about 5 minutes long, and try to push them out every two weeks or so. You can find all Iron Sky Signals here, and here’s the latest episode, episode nr. 22, which came out just very recently!

Again, most of all we’d loved to hear your thoughts on how to improve Signal as well!

The reason we’re pushing these out is because we are getting ready to start working on the next production, and will be announcing more about that very shortly here! So, stay tuned, troopers, and march on!

Iron Sky: Invasion -game coming to PC, XBox and PS3!

September 5th, 2012 by Timo Vuorensola

Great news, dear troopers! Iron Sky game – a proper space shooter – is on it’s way, from an award winning multi-platinum selling game developer Reality Pump (Earth 2150, Two Worlds 2, etc.), is developing the official Iron Sky video game Iron Sky: Invasion, which will release on November on PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Iron Sky: Invasion puts the player in the pilot seat of defending Earth from a sudden Nazi invasion – from space. Even though Iron Sky: Invasion is a space simulator, the game contains major underlying theme of politics: everything, even defending your planet from Moon Nazis, requires skillful political maneuvers. You will need to know who you are fighting for, whose boots you are stepping on, and choose your friends – or more importantly – enemies carefully.

Reality Pump has been developing Iron Sky: Invasion in close connection with us – we’ve been helping them to tie both the visuals and storyline tightly into the Iron Sky universe. Iron Sky: Invasion will utilize technology developed by Reality Pump Studios showcasing beautiful graphics and high-speed battle sequences. The Grace2 engine allows photorealistic renderings of hundreds of space ships, advanced destruction physics and sophisticated AI of piloting spacecraft. Additionally, Grace2 will show the game in stereoscopic 3D for all players with 3D TV’s and monitors.

Walküries approaching Earth in Iron Sky: Invasion.

I’ve always known that Iron Sky needed a proper video game around the franchise, one where the whole complexity of the world of Iron Sky could be examined. It’s good to announce Reality Pump’s involvement, as the world of Iron Sky – one we’ve cherished and nurtured for years – is now in the capable hands of an experienced, quality-driven game studio.

Topware Interactive‘s Iron Sky: Invasion will arrive in stores, Steam and other outlets on November 30th 2012.

We’ve agreed with the game developer to pre-sell this game with a special price to the Iron Sky community to finance the development of Iron Sky prequel & sequel.

So the game is available NOW at our STORE!
