I just got over feeling warm and fuzzy about my copy of NIN’s Ghosts arriving in it’s physical form when NIN fires another salvo on the dusty old music industry.
They’ve released a new album again - and this time completely for free. And even better, it’s licenced under a Creative Commons attribution non-commercial share-alike license. It’s a bunch of big words, but basicly means you can share the album with your friends, remix and sample to your hearts content as long as it’s not for commercial purposes and you let others do the same to the stuff you create.
To quote a finnish commercial. “That’s pretty fair”.
And yes, we’re going to do the same with the Iron Sky teaser if you’re wondering. But the remix pack will be released bit later, simply because we need some time to put it together.
It’s the last crunch for the teaser. We’re sitting at the office and propably will be until late tomorrow. But it seems we’re on schedule and spirits are high right now.
But that for situation raport. We just took a little break and discussed finnish music we like. And general consensus was that Jumala by Apulanta is a good song, even if you don’t like the band. There’s also a great video for the song, made by Ihmiskunnan Ainoa Toivo. They’re one of the most interesting amateur film groups in Finland. Though the movies they make are pretty much the complete opposite of Star Wreck. The unfortunate side effect is that they are not very populist, they’re not the kind of short films people generally watch on the internet. Their films are small, personal stories and in finnish. But check out the video for Jumala below.
The guest stars this time were the guys from Adamantium Studios, go check their website out!
Post Scriptum
Were getting a lot of new readers today (the 23rd), so here’s a quick crash course on what’s been going on. These are (almost) daily videos counting down to the release of the Iron Sky teaser on 5th of May.
And if you managed to watch all that I should propably explain that yes, we do actual work as well. Check out the latest music video produced by Energia, White Flame - Hour of Emptiness.
All the stuff we managed to film on friday was so dull we didn’t bother doing a daily of it. But instead here’s some text adventure inspired nerdcore rap from MC Frontalot.
I broke my record. One week of work with only 8 hours of sleep. And I didn’t even leave the office during that time! Beat that! Only Imperial Edition deadline rush came close…
A couple of months ago we decided to do Energia’s first music video: White Flame - Hour of Emptiness. And now some will undoubtably ask “why are you wasting time on some stupid music videos, do the fucking movie!” Well, the answer is very simple: we need practise, practise and practise before filming the Iron Sky. Timo needs to practise directing, I need to figure out how to produce on a larger scale, our CGI team needs superior 3d skillz etc… After all, we don’t want to practise with Iron Sky - it needs to be perfect - at least very close to it:)
A band playing on the moon and “Ilsa the shewolf of SS” sounded like a good idea. And were able to use some elements from the upcoming Iron Sky demo - which made the video possible in such a short production time in the first place. We ended up with 100 composite shots, about 1/3 of those were 3d tracked shots. And that means awful lot of work! But we enjoyed the challenge as always. Although I doubt that my body enjoyed so much. After the week I was crippled in every possible way, I couldn’t even speak decent sentences!
So was it worth it? Well hell yes! We gained much needed practise on basic filming with tight schedules, 3d tracking, greenscreen filming. I really enjoy being on the set during the shootings (with beautiful women), it’s fun! The deadlines are not fun - but you really can’t avoid those in this business.
So check out the video now and get a glimpse at some (unfinished) elements appearing in Iron Sky demo! One more thing: this is not an official Iron Sky music video, it only happens to use the same moon setup :)
Well, when things change they certainly change fast. Late last night we found out that Älymystö, Timo’s band that he so recently wrote about, has landed a three-album deal with a major record label. As a result of this and long and serious talks together with the band and the Energia team, Timo is becoming a full-time musician and resigning his post as director of Iron Sky, effective immediately. At this moment, we’re unsure who will direct Iron Sky, but Samuli has intimated that locally famous director Timo Koivusalo has expressed interest in the job - we’ll keep you posted. I guess the next best thing to Timo is another Timo!
EDIT 13.06: It seems that Mr Koivusalo won’t be available, after all. So we’ve made the decision to go with what we have, and have Samuli direct Iron Sky.
In my Other Life, i’m the vocalist for a Finnish underground black metal industrial noise band Älymystö. We are right at this moment working for our new album, and our thereminister, Mr. Honkonen (also known for his roles as Fukov and Festerbester in Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning) has been working on our video diaries from the Band Camp sessions. Just thought that I wanted to share the latest one with you guys und gals.
Finland’s most prominent rock band Poets of the Fall has just released their new album, Revolution Roulette. To get a taster of POTF’s new album, go and visit their MySpace page and listen the song Ultimate Fling.
To those not familiar with Poets of the Fall, they popped up for stardom by doing the wonderful end credits song for Max Payne 2, Late Goodbye.
