The heralds of the brave new music business, Nine Inch Nails have released their new album Ghosts I-IV. The first 9 songs are available as a completely free download, while the entire 36 song album is available for a little bit of money. The download is $5 and download +physical disc packs go from $10 to $300 super special edition.
It all seems to work fine, I’m downloading my mp3’s at 80K/s. The only slight imperfection in a pleasant shopping experience was that while the double cd +download is priced at very reasonable $10, only the last confirmation page revealed that postage and handling is whopping $13. Serves me right for clinging on to physical media, I guess…
It will be interesting to see how this works out. At least here the signs are good. I’ve now bought my very first NIN album and the question is will Timo go for the $75 special edition or the $300 version…
Edit: Okay, so it didn’t actually work. The download died and since the download is one time only I guess I’m a bit screwed. But can’t blame them too much, the servers are taking a huge beating right now so this kind of stuff happens.
Edit2: Well, it seems everything will be fine… sometime. Newest update on nin.com says:

As some of you have already guessed, last weekend we were actually filming a music video for a band called White Flame! The shootings were great, and we had a lot of fun, although days were exhausting and filled with scheduling problems, but it was good to be on a set, directing, once again, after a pretty long pause. Most importantly, we were able to test out some elements we would later need for the Iron Sky the film, and also filmed some missing stuff for the demo.
The script for White Flame’s Hour of Emptiness video has been forged so, that the production goes partly hand in hand with the last few things we still need to do for the demo. Also, it was good to fiddle around with some nazi flick cliches, like Ilsa and an interrogation room scenario, that would propably be a bit too cheesy as such for Iron Sky’s style, but terribly fun anyhow!
I’ve never liked that much working on music videos for some reason, but they are good for training and pretty challenging - trying to fit minimum budget into maximum production values, and respecting the ideas of a group of half-alcoholic rockers (ok, ok, WF guys are actually nice people :). After that, shooting a film with enough crew, time and everything in my own hands will seem easy as hell! :D
The environment was amazing. We shot the film in the cellars an old, abandoned asylum close to Tampere, where we set up the most roughest interrogation room. The place was pretty creepy, and when we entered the room for the first time, we found in one corner a big pool of blood and some shells lying around the floor. No idea what had been going on there, we hope it was some props for another film that had been shot there several months ago. What made me feel uneasy was the fact that the blood was still wet and fresh…
The second day shootings took place at Akun Tehdas, a small studio in the vincity of Tampere, where we set up the greenscreen and had the band play for the camera. Good fun.
One of the things I’m most happy about was the castings: three super-cute girls from a Swedish pop-trio Sister Love, and a model called Sofia, accompanied by the band - mainly Vince, the singer - and each and every one of them did amazing job. I was especially surprised how well Vince, being a rock-band singer and having virtually no experience in front of camera, worked like a seasoned professional, always in a good mood and sporting everyone else up.
Schedules sucked big time and technical problems were present all times, but the crew was amazing, didn’t utter one word of discontent, and worked like hell despite long hours! The video was shot by Juice Huhtala, directed by me, and produced by Samuli Torssonen. We don’t know the release date yet (it’s up to the recording company), but you’ll be the first one to know! Music video from the Russian band apparently called Hände Hoch (meaning “hand up”, also the first line uttered by space nazis in the very first “Iron Sky” idea) for their song Meine Kleine.
This is definetly an example of the kind of Russian culture that Captain Fukov would love.
Hi, it’s Timo here reporting about Some Cool Things I Bumped Into in Eurocon 2007! The first one of them was a techno-thriller Exitz, starring some extremely beautiful, not-known actresses and the wonderful Malcom McDowell. The story is about an Indian illegal immigrant in UK, who gets hired to a massive game company, producing a reality game about real people’s lives – a game, where you can be whoever you want in the world and do whatever you want to. The story starts to unfold as a witty, complex technological thriller when the borders of game and reality begin blurring, and eventually nobody knows what is game, what is reality and who is the bad guy – or is there one.
I met the director of the film, Laurens Postma, in Eurocon, and we had a lehgty chat about UK film industry, film festivals and how he did his film. He’s a pretty well-established director, although his name didn’t ring bells in the beginning, but that’s propably because he’s been working a lot in India. I also promised to send him our film and talked a bit about Iron Sky, and he was pretty impressed about the Iron Sky poster on one wall. That’s nice.
His story with Exitz is that it’s now sitting on a shelf, and he’s unable to release it because the production company who owns the rights screwed the government with VATs, and it (not surprisingly) backfired on them, and now everybody is fighting on who own the rights… So, for him it’s technically illegal to show the film, but he likes to go around and do it anyway, to festivals and that sort of stuff. He also said that this is pretty normal in GB – they make about 40-45 films a year there, and 20-25 never get shown anywhere because of various reasons. So, every year around 50 million euros get just thrown to the well of the Kankkula farm (no, didn’t translate…). Exitz is a 2-million euro production, although the production value would suggest it’s at least 10m€ in Hollywood.
The second super-cool thing was a band called Press Play On Tape. The Eurocon had them playing there, and what they do is they play rock-covers of game music and that kind of stuff. I came in there just by accident, when I head that somebody was playing ‘(The Ultimate Showdown of) The Ultimate Destiny’ by Lemon Demon. Next they rolled in a great cover of Monkey Island’s theme, and as an encore, played Monty On The Run’s theme. What’s even cooler is that for every song they have a video of the game the music is from, in gameplay. That was a big nostalgy trip that rocked the shit out of the audience at the same time. We need to book them for the next Star Wreck Con!
And of course, it was great to visit the Russian Vodka Party and enjoy some sophisticated alcoholocaust with the Finnish scifi-people, who always are a good company. We ended up to my room with bunch of people and continued where the Vodka Party had left us…
Oh, and as a bonus, at the official dinner, Anne McCaffrey complimented my hair. I was walking in clouds for few minutes – an 81-years old scifi/fantasy legend likes my hair! Woo-hoo! Super-Win!

Blogissamme on harvemmin levyarvosteluja, mutta kotimaista tieteismusiikkia arvostelemme aina kun sitä jostain vastaan putkahtaa. Tässäpä pari sanaan CMX:n uutukaisesta, Talvikuninkaasta.
”Taivas alkaa punertaa, se tietää mitä odottaa

Jos albumi alkaa näillä sanoilla, se ei voi olla kokonaan paha. Ja miksi olisikaan, onhan kyseessä suomen parhaita ja omaleimaisimpia rockpumppuja – CMX. Kahdeksankymmenluvulla nuorten poikien punkkibändistä ollaan edetty hevin, suomirokin ja tupla-proge -albumin kautta ihka oikeaan teemalevyyn, Talvikuninkaaseen.
Teema-albumit ajavat vanheneville artisteille saman kuin moottoripyörä viisikymppisille insinööreille. Ja aivan kuten moottoripyörätkin, myös teemalevyt voivat hurauttaa bändin sataaseitsämääkymppiä päin tiiliseinää. On enemmänkin sääntö kuin poikkeus, että elähtäneiden rokkikukkojen pompöösit vuodatukset kiedotaan pakahduttavaan läjään levyjä, monitahoista sekavaa tarinaa ja huimia visioita, jotka purkautuvat väsyttävinä kymmenen-plus –minuuttisina eepoksina kuulijoille, jotka eivät ymmärrä mistään yhtään mitään.
Myös CMX:n Talvikuninkaassa toistuvat nämä elementit – massiivinen taustatarina, kymmenen minuutin moniosainen avausraita, hämärä tulevaisuudenvisio ja DVD-kotelon kokoinen jättimäinen cd-kotelo maalautettuine levyvihkoineen. Ainoa kysymys on: kantaako levy itsensä? Lyhyttä vastausta ei ole, joten mennäänpä pari askelta taaksepäin ja pureudutaan elementteihin, josta albumi on tehty.
Ensimmäiseksi on hyvä havaita, että levy edustaa harvinaista, joskin syyttä unohduksiin jäänyttä musiikin alasuuntausta, suomalaista tieteismusiikkia. Scifi-teemaisia levyjä eivät suomalaisbändit emoilultaan, hevitykseltään tai inhorealismiltaan juuri puske pihalle, joskin yksittäiset artistit jaksavat ilahduttaa meitä scifi-friikkejä irtobiiseillä. (Näistä on SF Rediscovery –niminen porukka koonnut ilahduttavan kokoelman, joka kantaa nimeä Avaruus Suomessa – levystä lisää vanhemmassa blogientryssämme, ja tarkemmin albumiin pääset tutustumaan SF Rediscoveryn MySpace –sivustolla.) Siksipä kokonainen albumillinen täynnä tulevaisuudenvisioita, teknobabblea ja mystiikkaa saapuu täyttämään tyhjyyttään ammottavaa lokosta maamme musiikkikentässä.
Musiikillisesti CMX tunnetaan proge-heavy –henkisestä, omaleimaisesta soundista joka aikanaan toi shamanistisuudessaan tunnelmia rauta-ajan suomesta, mutta hitaasti kääntyi kohti futuristisempaa ilmaisua, menettämättä kuitenkaan perusvirettään. Talvikuningas on selvää jatkoa aikaisempien albumien Dinosaurus Stereophonicus ja Aion viitoittamalle tielle, jossa monimutkaiset biisirakenteet saavat ystäväkseen hienovaraisesti käsiteltyjä lauluja. Sävellykset ovat tuhteja, soljuvat eteenpäin hyvässä tasapainossa ja välistä löytyy niin kevyttä fiilistelyä Pink Floydin maisemissa, hevijunttausta Mokoman hengessä ja punkkihuudatusta Wastedin malliin. Kokonaisuutena Talvikuningas on raskaampi kuin viime aikojen levyt, eikä sieltä löydy ensimmäistäkään sinkkukelpoista rallattelua, toisin kuin useimmilta levyiltä sitä ennen.
CMX:n vokalisti-basisti A.W. Yrjänä on sanoittanut ja säveltänytkin suurimman osan levystä. Hänen helmasyntejään ovat osaa kuulijoista ärsyttävät, osan taas suuresti rakastamat kryptiset sanoitukset ja melko yksipuolinen laulusoundi, joka ei kestä kovin monimutkaisia revittelyjä. Talvikuninkaalla A.W. kuulostaa kuitenkin paremmalta kuin aikoihin, laulut istuvat musiikkiin hyvin, eikä bändin muuten erittäin korkeatasoinen soitto tällä kertaa tunnu kiilaavan sen ohi, kuten Aionilla pääsi käymään. Tasapaino on tärkeää.
Selvää on, että Yrjänä on scifinsä lukenut. Tekstit ammentavat bensansa tieteiskliseiden määrättömän syvästä arkusta, ja yhdistävät langat eivät tunnu erityisen kestäviltä. Enemmän kuin loistavia kokonaisuuksia, sanoitukset tarjoavat herkullisia soundbytejä. Vai kenet jättää kylmäksi sellaiset lauseet kuin ”Kerran jäätyy kaikki aine, pimeys ottaa omakseen joka hiukkashitusen, ja entropia lakaisee peilin tyhjäks fotoneista, muistoista ja tallenteista, avaruus on tyhjä taulu, aika loputon.” Mitään järkeähän siinä ei ole, mutta hyvältä kuulostaa! Bravo!
Kokonaisuutena Talvikuningas on upean näköinen (erikseen pitää hattua nostaa konseptitaiteenomaisen kuvituksen maalanneelle Sami Saramäelle) ja kuuloinen paketti, joka kuitenkin jättää toivomaan niitä paria erinomaista, esiin nousevaa kappaletta. Tasaisen hyvät biisit eivät juuri toisistaan tyylillisesti erotu, mikä saakin levyn sujahtamaan ensimmäisillä kuuntelukerroilla ohi korvien. Vaikuttaa kuitenkin siltä, että Talvikuninkaassa on kätkettyjä ominaisuuksia, jotka – jos levylle suvaitsee antaa vain aikaa – kypsyvät ja kohoavat pintaan, lunastaen kaikki ne lupaukset joita rouhean visuaalinen levy roiskii ympäriinsä.
Jos jotain yleisarvosanaa pitäisi levylle antaa, pistetään nyt vaikka nelonen. AMK-asteikolla.

UPDATE: CMX:n Talvikuninkaasta on tehty myös lyhytanimaatio, jonka lukijamme Ville ystävällisesti kaivoi netin kätköistä. Videon ovat ohjanneet veljekset Sampsa ja Janne Kukkonen, eikä se ole oikeastaan yhtään hullumpi scifi-fiilistely. Jos nyt kaivamalla pitäisi kaivaa jotain natistavaa, hahmojen turpavärkit ovat karuhkoja, muuten liike, kuvat ja yleinen tunnelma osuvat nappiin. Kyllä se suomalainen scifi tästä vielä ponnistaa, hienoa!
