There’s a potentially very interesting thread starting on our message board about Finland in WWII.

Now for my question. What exactly was Finland’s role in the Second World War?

Now, often this question is followed by “weren’t you allied with the Nazis?”. This is usually followed by a short, unconfortable silence and “um, yeah, kinda, but we didn’t really like them…” and then the interesting discussion starts with several Finns posting very thorough lessons on Finnish military history - and it’s an interesting history I might add.

So this is where the thread is now. We’ve covered in short the Soviet agression leading to Winter War, the defencive victory and occupation of Russian terratories in the beginning of the continuation war and greed leading to getting our asses kicked and the the Lapland war, with Finland fighting the Nazis and the m burning down Rovaniemi…

This is a good opportunity to get to know what Finland actually did in WWII and what kind of skeletons we might have in our national closet. For you foreigners it’s also a good primer to the Finnish mentality. Yeah, we kind of fought with the bad guys, but it was just because we didn’t have any choice. And that while we’re still very proud of what our grandparents accomplished with fighting those wars, we’re not proud of them having fought a war nor for killing their enemies. We’re proud, because without them we would have lived in a very different country - one that would not have been called Finland. We’re proud because they did what we Finns value over everything else “doing what must be done”.

That’s the key to our stubborness, we’re not very good at making pompous excuses, we just tend to do things because we think they have to be done. Like, say, make a movie in our living room for seven years, because, well, we wanted to make a movie.

And when we Finns want to really bang our drum on something we like to compare it to the Winter War…

And on a completely unrelated note:

The office has been without a decent net connection for a week (and still is) because we’re changing to a better broadband service. Our old connection has been disconnected, but the new one hasn’t been installed yet. So we might have been a bit quieter on the net front and it might be a bit slow to get replies to emails during the work hours.

Update: And as it were, we just got our connection hooked up and the office is back online!

So, the first of the Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, Voices in the Dark has been released in the US. Even though Finland had a very rapid Babylon 5 fandom, there hasn’t been that much expectation for them. Possibly due to Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers tv-movie that I still haven’t managed to finish watching. Mostly because it sucks worse than the vacuum of space in the Alien films.

This time however, I not only managed to watch the whole thing, but I have to admit that I liked it. Sure, Voices in the Dark has it’s problems, but it felt like the good old B5 I stayed up watching all those years ago and didn’t get enough sleep before school. Actually, it had much of the same problems, they just seemed more obious now when the quality of TV productions is a lot higher in general than in the early 90’s.

Let’s start with the format. Now, Voices in the Dark isn’t really a fish nor a bird, it’s a chimera, containing a bit of both and looking mighty odd. It’s two 45 minute episodes wrapped into one 90 minute dvd movie. There isn’t any real connection between them, exept for a thematic one, but they aren’t separated either. So if you watch this as a movie you’ll be scratching your head. Just take it as two episodes watched together.

There were entire scenes contaning nothing but exposition in dialogue, the sets were cheaper than ever and even though the CGI was done by the same company as Galactica, well, let’s just say that Energia would have delivered better quality for less cash (so JMS, if you’re reading this and not completely pissed at the LotR bashing, give us a call…).

Then again, I found it very refreshing that the two stories in the film didn’t rely on visuals or action. Instead there was a lot of long, poetic speeches and pondering between moral choises - the things that B5 did best. And unlike the rather misleading trailer lets you believe, this time there was no ancient evil threatening to drown the whole galaxy in darkness. Instead there was humor and some self-consious put-ups of certain elements of the show.

So, all in all, it was fun watching B5 again, I especially liked the ideas in the first part, consentrating on Lochley, while the second part about Sheridan felt more complete and polished. I’ll be waiting for the upcoming parts.

In Europe the DVD is released in September and for once it’s not too expensive. Play.com offers pre-order for 15.49e. At least for me that’s a price I’m willing to pay even for nostalgias’ sake. Compare that with, for example, the HD releases of original Star Trek clocking in $217 per season. Well, I guess if you have money to buy a HD player and a TV you can afford expensive box sets as well.

Kiitos tämän viimeaikaisen kohun (Romanifoorumi haluaa romanien tekemän Manne-TV:n pois ruudusta rasistisena - Yle käyttäytyy ylimielisesti ja suostuu vaihtamaan nimen) täytyi viime viikonlopun jakso katsoa.

Nämä negatiiviset puolet on käsitelty kuoliaaksi jo kaikkialla, joten ajattelin tuoda esille positiivisiakin puolia:

Ensinnäkin, Ylelle pisteet siitä, ettei se anna ulkopuolisen arvostelun vaikuttaa ohjelmapolitiikkaansa. Kun komediasarjoja aletaan sensuroida loukkaavina, niin sen jälkeen meillä ei ole South Parkia, Uutisvuotoa tai Reinikaista (saati sitten Siskoa ja sen Veljeä, jossa mm. vammaisia kohdellaan ihan vaan ihmisinä ja nauretaan tekopyhille hyysääjille). Komedian pidää saada koetella hyvän maun rajoja ja ylittää ne, se on sen tehtävä.

Toiseksi, romanifoorumi syyttää Romano-TV:tä (os. Manne-TV) stereotypioita lujittavaksi. Tämä ei pidä paikkaansa. Romanit on usein mielletty hevosmiesten ja ennustajien lisäksi nimenomaan viihdyttäviksi. Jakson katsoneena voin sanoa, että tätä stereotypiaa vastaan Manne-TV taistelee ansiokkaasti - se ei ole vähäisissäkään määrin viihdyttävä.

Kaiken rehellisyyden nimissä kuitenkin vielä papukaijamerkki tekijöille hyvistä aikomuksista. Huumori on erinomainen keino käsitellä ennakkoluuloja. Hyvä, että sitä opetellaan pikkuhiljaa täällä Suomessakin. Ehkä vielä jonain päivänä tulee se Ähläm Sählämin ja Manne-TV:n henkinen jälkeläinen, joka onnistuu olemaan oikeasti hauska.

Good news, dear friends!
The release of Star Wreck on the Internet didn’t go out unnoticed - we’ve heard that we’ve inspired a lot of filmmakers also to release their productions for free. To get more quality films out there for much wider public audience does echo the message we in our own way started and keep on repeating: Internet is not an enemy, but a very strange and powerful friend you must learn to know better, and after you’ve done so - there’s nothing that can stop you. (Sounds like a line from a cheap ninja movie - and, as we all know, there’s nothing better than a cheap ninja movie!)

However, I don’t want to go on and steal the show, since the reason I’m writing now is that a fellow Wrecker Tianyi Pan and his mates took two years and made a feature film called Graffiti Within - and today they are following the our footsteps and releasing it on the Internet for free distribution. This is great news in so many ways, but the most important thing is that this actually is a very good film (and so do think also the fine folk at Århus Festival of Independent Arts, where the film won the whole festivals).

The guys sent me the DVD almost half a year ago and I didn’t get the time to watch it until few months ago - and I absolutely fell in for the film. The synopsis states the following:

Misty Friday Films’s debut movie GRAFFITI WITHIN tells a story about Jake, who moves into capital city Helsinki and meets up with his childhood friend, Toni. The winsome threesome is complete, as Jake brings his best friend, Erika with him. However, the summer they thought is going to be the best ever turns out tragically, as one of them harbours a painful secret.

What will happen between Jake and Erika when Jake finds a ladyfriend in Helsinki? What can you do when your best friend is a girl? How problematic is to first spend a night with your girlfriend and then go sleep next to a girl friend? How much do friends change in ten years? Is anything going to stay same, when Toni is haunted by his past?

It’s a very believeable youth film, a good drama with good comedy elements and a nice rolling story, some pretty convincing actors and the director Miika Ullakko has a good grip of the film overall. What I specifically liked about the film was the atmosphere they managed to create around it.

Go check out the film, it’s certainly worth it, and the guys are on our side! And always remember - if you like what you see, get the DVD. It’s not too expensive, but will hopefully help the guys to keep on making more good stuff for you. And no, this is not a paid commercial - I just feel strongly for the cause and I’m happy to see that our ideology actually does have a following behind.

Ps. no subtitles as far as I understood yet for the film (the film is in Finnish), but hopefully they’ll get them up soon too. Also, not yet at least a quality download available (only a streaming video), but I’m convinced that they are working on it as well (and then again, there’s the DVD with the best quality for that).

…AND THE FILMS

We saw none. Maybe next year! I heard about this great 3D-horror-flick though, where viewers had to leave the show because it was *so* gruesome. But now I know more about Finnish films than after the Finnish Film Market happening I wrote couple of months ago.

Of course, the most profilic film there was – without a doubt – the official Lordi movie, Dark Floors. It tells a story about an autistic girl who is taken to another, more hellish world in an elevator ride at a hospital with her parents. I really don’t know how Lordi and the monsters are related to the story – are they the main evil guys or something of the style of Hellraiser, as the rulers of this dimension – but it’s yet very hard to decide on the concept whether it would be good or not. The poster was a bit crappy – just the face of Lordi in the darkness, no surprises there, and they had absolutely nothing to show there. We met briefly with Markus Selin, the producer, and he mentioned that here they are just promoting, and at American Film Market, they go out and sell the film, when they have a 12-minutes clip ready. Sounds like a good plan, it can become an interesting hit. At least, the film was on the cover of Variety on Day 2’s episode, and posters were all over. Only funny thing was that I realized that surprisingly few people knew what Lordi was. But we’ll see what the movie’ll turn out to be, I can’t wait to see the demo!

Somebody had said that “if you don’t got anything to show at Cannes, don’t go there”. We – as we didn’t have the demo ready – would say the same. Most of the meetings didn’t happen and we weren’t out there doing nothing since we didn’t have anything to show. But Christmas Story guys – they really did have something to show. I was just blown away, amazed and even descended to the state of fanboying out the film, which is as good looking as Jade Warrior, maybe even more than that, and seems to tell a very interesting story of the childhood of Father Christmas. Hannu-Pekka Björkman and Kari Väänänen in the same film, I couldn’t ask for more as a Finn! Beautiful pictures, great shooting (Orasmaa again!) and one of the best directors in Finland.

Other than that, there were showreels of Black Ice, which still looks like shit (though the script sounds interestingish), the Year of the Wolf which looks nice but I was told that the film doesn’t really work, Quest for a Heart (the Rolli-thing, the animation is still skippy, though the production design looks great!), and Sauna (working title). Sauna is one damn interesting production, which will hopefully be filmed in the fall, directed by AJ Annila (Jade Warrior) and produced by Bronson Club, a new Finnish production company focusing on smaller budget feature films with good scripts and good teams. AJ talked a bit about the film, and it seems to tell a story about a sauna where you can actually wash your sins away. AJ said that he wants to do such a vile film that he doesn’t even want to direct it (a good pitch!) – and nobody will want to see it (maybe not the best pitch if you want to sell the film). Hats off to the attitude, I really like the demo which looks disturbing and as the production seems to be light enough, it could really turn out to be a very good film. Finnish horror is something there’s never enough! Now we have Lordi, Martinin pirut and Sauna, a horror boom!

KÄNNIN JÄLKEEN TULEE KRAPULA – LIFE AFTER CANNES

So, that was Cannes, first time ever there, hopefully mo’ Cannes’ to come. I’m now an hour away from the rainy and cold Tampere, and never felt so homesick before. Too bad I wasn’t able to post daily as I had hoped to do, but maybe this gives a good picture of how Cannes was. And thanks for reading!

PS. SO WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE DEMO?

A good question, although a bit aggressively put – but I understand your annoyment. We had promised something, but failed to keep that promise. But please be patient, it’s really on it’s way. We had the change to see the final material only few hours before the initial release, and found out that some of the stuff didn’t actually work the way we wanted it to work. Too bad they released some of the stuff at Nelonen already, but hell, we’ll polish the teaser and give you the best, because we know you’ve been expecting quality. Thanks for your patience in advance!

Toivumme Samulin kanssa parhaillaan toimistolla Finnish Film Marketin avajaisillallisesta ja siitä seuranneesta juhlimistoimenpiteestä Tampereen keskustan eräissäkin ravintoloissa. Kekkereissä tuli juotua helvetisti viiniä, syötyä The Grillin äärimmäisen keskitasoista ruokaa, tavattua elokuva-alan persoonia (kuten Selin, Bardy ja kumppanit), ja jauhettua loputtomasti vapaan elokuvalevityksen ilosanomaa. Aamulla olikin sitten nihkeämpi olo, ja raahauduimme markettiin kuuntelemaan kotimaisen elokuvan tämän ja seuraavan vuoden uusia tuulia.

Mikäpä tähän parempi paikka onkaan kuin pitchaus-sessiot, jossa tuottajat pyrkivät myymään elokuviaan kansainvälisille TV-kanaville ja levittäjille. Täytyy sanoa, että suomalaisen elokuva-pitchauksen taso on, ainakin tänään näkemäni perusteella, todella kehnoissa kantimissa. Epävarmat tuottajat selittelivät huonolla englannilla sekavia kuvauksia tuotannoistaan. Pahiten mieleen jäi muuan naistuottaja, joka horisi pitkän ja polveilevan ja täysin älyttömältä kuulostavan tarinan, jonka rakennetekijöitä olivat Berliinin muuri, joku koiranpentu joka ilmeisesti kasvaa liian isoksi ja kuolleet koirat jossakin tähdissä - eikä ainakaan hänen selvityksensä perusteella mitään loogista yhteyttä näiden asioiden välillä tuntunut olevan. Elokuva tulee ulos vuonna ‘two hundred eight’, ja se on romanttinen komedia. Kiva kiva, en malta odottaa…

Historialliset sotadraamat eivät valitettavasti tule nytkään jättämään suomalaisia rauhaan. Nyt kun kädet on pesty pariinkin otteeseen jatkosota-aivopierusta ja talvisota-rätti on kierretty rutikuivaksi, siirrytään kansalaissotaan. Kutakuinkin kahdeksasta esitellystä suuresta tuotannosta neljä käsitteli tätä Suomen itsenäistymisvaihetta, kuka milläkin verukkeella - rakkaustarinoita joka tapauksessa jokainen. Raskas, surumielinen sello taustalla luomassa tunnelmaa kun harmaat, tylsänpulskeat ja onnettoman lavastetun näköiset kohtaukset vilistävät ohi silmien… ja samaa elokuva toisensa jälkeen.

Ainoa todellinen valopilkku tuotantojen välissä näyttäisi olevan A Quest for a Heart, suomalaisille tutummin Rolli-animaatio (ö:n pisteet on poistettu kansainvälisyysaspektia ystävällisesti huomioiden). Kyse on ensimmäisestä pitkästä kotimaisesta animaatiosta (joita ei koskaan ole liikaa!), ja se kertoo rolleista ja haltioista ja siitä, kuinka heidän pitää työskennellä yhteisvoimin pelastaakseen maailma pahalta.

Saimme nähdä (ensimmäisinä maailmassa, meille kerrottiin) melko kattavan katsauksen elokuvan graafiseen ilmeeseen, ja oikein hyvältähän se näyttää. Mieleen tuli eittämättä smurffit sekä miljöistä että hahmoista, ja kysymys siitä, miten MRP aikoo smurffata kasaan elokuvan Röllistä ilman ö:n pisteitä ja Allu Tuppuraisen naamaa. Vaikutti kuitenkin siltä, että homma on hyvissä käsissä, ja mörtsändaissiakin voisi kuvitella löytyvän kauppojen hyllyiltä ihan kivasti. Näin perheellisenä pidän kovasti siitä, että supisuomalaista (no, tuotanto on suomalais-englantilais-jonkunmaalais-venäläinen, että tiedä sitten siitä supisuomalaisuudesta) lastenanimaatiota saadaan näille turuille. Myös itselläni on animaatio-innostus nostanut hitaasti päätään, mutta eiköhän tehdä nyt Rautataivas ensin ja haaveillaan tulevaisuudesta myöhemmin.

Vuoden 2006 Oscarit on jaettu. Gaalan juonsi ensimmäistä kertaa Ellen DeGeneres, joka ei ollut erityisen hauska. Silti, huonoimmillaan juonto muistutti siitä, kuinka onnellisia suuressa maailmassa ollaan, kun gaaloja juontavat ihan oikeasti hyvät koomikot - toisin kuin meillä täällä, jossa pönötysjuhlien juontajina on yleensä metri ja 80 senttiä raakalautaa.

Kuten etukäteen jo veikkailtiin, Martin Scorsesen ura on riittävän lähellä loppua ja akatemia uskalsi viimeinkin palkita The Departedin sekä parhaana elokuvana, että Scorsesen parhaana ohjaajana.

Koska vammaisrooleja ei ehdokkaisiin mahtunut, jaettiin parhaiden näyttelijöiden pystit valtionpäämiesten rooleista. Naispääosan palkinto meni Helen Mirrenille Englannin kuningattaren roolista elokuvassa The Queen. Miespääosan vei odotusten mukaisesti Forest Whitaker Ugandan presidentin (ja Skotlannin viimeisen kuninkaan - sattumaako?) roolista elokuvasta The Last King of Scotland. Vedonlyönnissä Mirrenin voiton kerroin oli muuten huimaava 1.03, joten ei muuta kuin onnea kaikille äkkirikastuneille uhkapelureille.

Parhaan dokumentin palkinto meni odotetusti ilmastonmuutoselokuvalle An Inconvenient Truth, jonka kävi pokkaamassa entinen Yhdysvaltain seuraava presidentti, Al Gore. Vaikka Gorelle vuonna 2000 irvailtiin tämän internetin keksimistä koskevista lausunnoista, niin tämä todisti sen, että Al on paitsi eri lajiketta kuin George W. Bush, hän on myöskin parempi kuin Ronald Reagan. Ennen kuin hänestä tuli vapaan maailman johtaja Raygun loi uraa elokuvien parissa, mutta niiden palkitseminen Oscarilla olisi yhtä huono vitsi kuin apinan valitseminen maailman mahtavimman valtion presidentiksi.

Pan’s Labyrinth hävisi parhaan vieraskielisen elokuvan lohdutuspalkinnon saksalaisille, mutta mutta vei kolme oikeaa pystiä taiteellisesta ohjauksesta, maskeerauksesta ja kuvauksesta. Vaikka Pan’s Labyrinth olikin kaunis elokuva, olisi parhaan kuvauksen pysti ehdottomasti kuulunut Children of Menille - joka huomattavasti ansaitummin hävisi myöskin kahdessa muussa kategoriassa.

Yllättävintä oli, että ilmastonmuutos voitti myöskin pystin parhaasta kappaleesta, Melissa “Homoseksuaalinen countrylaulaja” Etheridgen esittämällä laululla I Need To Wake Up. Melissa suuteli naisystäväänsä suorassa lähetyksessä, korruptoiden gaalaa seuranneiden amerikkalaislasten aivot peruuttamattomasti suvaitsevaisuudella, lähimmäisenrakkaudella ja muulla sopimattomalla huuhaalla. Hämmästyttävää tästä tekee se, että tällaisten siveettömyyksien välttämiseksi suorissa lähetyksissä on nykyään kymmenen sekunnin viive - oliko sensuurinapin painaja nukahtanut työnsä ääreen, vai onko kyseessä jälleen yksi liberaalin Hollywoodin salajuoni?

Eddie Murphy sai rangaistuksen 90-luvun paskoista komedioistaan ja jäi ilman sivuosa-Oscaria. Häpeän lisäämiseksi parin vuoden takainen Idols-häviäjä Jennifer “Amerikan Antti Tuisku” Hudson vei kotiinsa palkinnon naisten sivuosaroolista.

Täydellisen listan voittajista voi käydä tsekkaamassa vaikkapa Wikipediasta tai IMDB:stä. Useimmat leffoista löytyvät myös DVD:llä, kuten vaikkapa Little Miss Sunshine, joka parhaan käsikirjoituksen palkinnolla täytti tämän vuoden “kukaan ei ole nähnyt sitä, joten sen täytyy olla hyvä”-kiintiön.
