Beyond the Iron Sky

I’m ashamed to admit that I only today learned of the Baen Free Library project. To those not In The Know, it’s an online service by the publishing company Baen Books that offers electronic versions of their books for free. It’s been around since 2000, and currently offers 98 titles. To quote First Librarian Eric Flint: “I will cheerfully put up the stuff for free myself. Because I am quite confident that any ‘losses’ I sustain will be more than made up for by the expansion in the size of my audience.” So they’ve been saying (and proving) the same thing that we demonstrated with Star Wreck - that free distribution cannot but benefit the authors - since the turn of the millennium. So we weren’t quite the first, although apparently, Mr Puskala endorsed the Free Library on our forum already in 2002.

So why is this fact so hard for show business to admit? Why is the industry trying to clamp down on online piracy when it’s so obviously counterproductive - more regulations means higher costs means artificially-elevated prices means piracy appears more attractive? Beats me. Probably because it’s so much easier to cling to what you grew up with instead of trying to change with the times. Possibly because the prevailing ideological climate seems to be moving in a more draconian, paranoid direction. We can only hope that successful endeavours like the Free Library (and Star Wreck) will eventually convince the movers and shakers that free distribution is an opportunity and not a threat.

Actually, I know the true reason. It’s because only good authors benefit from the publicity generated by free distribution. Let’s face it: without the artificial hype generated by massive publishing efforts - if people knew what it is they’re buying - would the likes of Dan Brown or Ilkka Remes ever sell a copy?

And would we really be any worse off for it?

Blogissamme on harvemmin levyarvosteluja, mutta kotimaista tieteismusiikkia arvostelemme aina kun sitä jostain vastaan putkahtaa. Tässäpä pari sanaan CMX:n uutukaisesta, Talvikuninkaasta.

”Taivas alkaa punertaa, se tietää mitä odottaa
kun telakointiasemilla hehkuu keulat alusten.
Ne lepäävät kuin haavoittuneet eläimet, niin väsyneet,
niin herää kaupunki saarrettu aamuun päivänsä viimeiseen.”

Jos albumi alkaa näillä sanoilla, se ei voi olla kokonaan paha. Ja miksi olisikaan, onhan kyseessä suomen parhaita ja omaleimaisimpia rockpumppuja – CMX. Kahdeksankymmenluvulla nuorten poikien punkkibändistä ollaan edetty hevin, suomirokin ja tupla-proge -albumin kautta ihka oikeaan teemalevyyn, Talvikuninkaaseen.

Teema-albumit ajavat vanheneville artisteille saman kuin moottoripyörä viisikymppisille insinööreille. Ja aivan kuten moottoripyörätkin, myös teemalevyt voivat hurauttaa bändin sataaseitsämääkymppiä päin tiiliseinää. On enemmänkin sääntö kuin poikkeus, että elähtäneiden rokkikukkojen pompöösit vuodatukset kiedotaan pakahduttavaan läjään levyjä, monitahoista sekavaa tarinaa ja huimia visioita, jotka purkautuvat väsyttävinä kymmenen-plus –minuuttisina eepoksina kuulijoille, jotka eivät ymmärrä mistään yhtään mitään.

Myös CMX:n Talvikuninkaassa toistuvat nämä elementit – massiivinen taustatarina, kymmenen minuutin moniosainen avausraita, hämärä tulevaisuudenvisio ja DVD-kotelon kokoinen jättimäinen cd-kotelo maalautettuine levyvihkoineen. Ainoa kysymys on: kantaako levy itsensä? Lyhyttä vastausta ei ole, joten mennäänpä pari askelta taaksepäin ja pureudutaan elementteihin, josta albumi on tehty.

Ensimmäiseksi on hyvä havaita, että levy edustaa harvinaista, joskin syyttä unohduksiin jäänyttä musiikin alasuuntausta, suomalaista tieteismusiikkia. Scifi-teemaisia levyjä eivät suomalaisbändit emoilultaan, hevitykseltään tai inhorealismiltaan juuri puske pihalle, joskin yksittäiset artistit jaksavat ilahduttaa meitä scifi-friikkejä irtobiiseillä. (Näistä on SF Rediscovery –niminen porukka koonnut ilahduttavan kokoelman, joka kantaa nimeä Avaruus Suomessa – levystä lisää vanhemmassa blogientryssämme, ja tarkemmin albumiin pääset tutustumaan SF Rediscoveryn MySpace –sivustolla.) Siksipä kokonainen albumillinen täynnä tulevaisuudenvisioita, teknobabblea ja mystiikkaa saapuu täyttämään tyhjyyttään ammottavaa lokosta maamme musiikkikentässä.

Musiikillisesti CMX tunnetaan proge-heavy –henkisestä, omaleimaisesta soundista joka aikanaan toi shamanistisuudessaan tunnelmia rauta-ajan suomesta, mutta hitaasti kääntyi kohti futuristisempaa ilmaisua, menettämättä kuitenkaan perusvirettään. Talvikuningas on selvää jatkoa aikaisempien albumien Dinosaurus Stereophonicus ja Aion viitoittamalle tielle, jossa monimutkaiset biisirakenteet saavat ystäväkseen hienovaraisesti käsiteltyjä lauluja. Sävellykset ovat tuhteja, soljuvat eteenpäin hyvässä tasapainossa ja välistä löytyy niin kevyttä fiilistelyä Pink Floydin maisemissa, hevijunttausta Mokoman hengessä ja punkkihuudatusta Wastedin malliin. Kokonaisuutena Talvikuningas on raskaampi kuin viime aikojen levyt, eikä sieltä löydy ensimmäistäkään sinkkukelpoista rallattelua, toisin kuin useimmilta levyiltä sitä ennen.

CMX:n vokalisti-basisti A.W. Yrjänä on sanoittanut ja säveltänytkin suurimman osan levystä. Hänen helmasyntejään ovat osaa kuulijoista ärsyttävät, osan taas suuresti rakastamat kryptiset sanoitukset ja melko yksipuolinen laulusoundi, joka ei kestä kovin monimutkaisia revittelyjä. Talvikuninkaalla A.W. kuulostaa kuitenkin paremmalta kuin aikoihin, laulut istuvat musiikkiin hyvin, eikä bändin muuten erittäin korkeatasoinen soitto tällä kertaa tunnu kiilaavan sen ohi, kuten Aionilla pääsi käymään. Tasapaino on tärkeää.

Selvää on, että Yrjänä on scifinsä lukenut. Tekstit ammentavat bensansa tieteiskliseiden määrättömän syvästä arkusta, ja yhdistävät langat eivät tunnu erityisen kestäviltä. Enemmän kuin loistavia kokonaisuuksia, sanoitukset tarjoavat herkullisia soundbytejä. Vai kenet jättää kylmäksi sellaiset lauseet kuin ”Kerran jäätyy kaikki aine, pimeys ottaa omakseen joka hiukkashitusen, ja entropia lakaisee peilin tyhjäks fotoneista, muistoista ja tallenteista, avaruus on tyhjä taulu, aika loputon.” Mitään järkeähän siinä ei ole, mutta hyvältä kuulostaa! Bravo!

Kokonaisuutena Talvikuningas on upean näköinen (erikseen pitää hattua nostaa konseptitaiteenomaisen kuvituksen maalanneelle Sami Saramäelle) ja kuuloinen paketti, joka kuitenkin jättää toivomaan niitä paria erinomaista, esiin nousevaa kappaletta. Tasaisen hyvät biisit eivät juuri toisistaan tyylillisesti erotu, mikä saakin levyn sujahtamaan ensimmäisillä kuuntelukerroilla ohi korvien. Vaikuttaa kuitenkin siltä, että Talvikuninkaassa on kätkettyjä ominaisuuksia, jotka – jos levylle suvaitsee antaa vain aikaa – kypsyvät ja kohoavat pintaan, lunastaen kaikki ne lupaukset joita rouhean visuaalinen levy roiskii ympäriinsä.

Jos jotain yleisarvosanaa pitäisi levylle antaa, pistetään nyt vaikka nelonen. AMK-asteikolla.

UPDATE: CMX:n Talvikuninkaasta on tehty myös lyhytanimaatio, jonka lukijamme Ville ystävällisesti kaivoi netin kätköistä. Videon ovat ohjanneet veljekset Sampsa ja Janne Kukkonen, eikä se ole oikeastaan yhtään hullumpi scifi-fiilistely. Jos nyt kaivamalla pitäisi kaivaa jotain natistavaa, hahmojen turpavärkit ovat karuhkoja, muuten liike, kuvat ja yleinen tunnelma osuvat nappiin. Kyllä se suomalainen scifi tästä vielä ponnistaa, hienoa!

The Sun wrote the other day:

Rock legend David Bowie is set to star in Dr Who — as an evil alien abductor.

Producers reckon the Ziggy Stardust singer, now 60, makes a perfect villain because of his “great other-worldly look”.

And he will cross swords with the Tardis’s Time Lord when he kidnaps crime author Agatha Christie — who in real life mysteriously vanished for 11 days in 1926.

Bowie’s willingness to appear in the two-part Dr Who special, to be shown on BBC1 next year, will surprise many of his fans.

This makes Dr. Who even much better that I had ever expected, since Bowie is my personal number one musician in the whole friggin’ world! I’m excited as hell!

In the meantime, it seems like YLE isn’t going to show the second season of Dr. Who any time soon, and the DVD-release with Finnish subtitles for the second season seems to take ages - if it’s ever going to come out. If someone of you guys reading this know something about either one of these, drop a comment. Because how I see things is that about as soon as the analog TV shuts down we lose Dr. Who and get a talk show hosted by Paavo Väyrynen :(

So, the first of the Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, Voices in the Dark has been released in the US. Even though Finland had a very rapid Babylon 5 fandom, there hasn’t been that much expectation for them. Possibly due to Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers tv-movie that I still haven’t managed to finish watching. Mostly because it sucks worse than the vacuum of space in the Alien films.

This time however, I not only managed to watch the whole thing, but I have to admit that I liked it. Sure, Voices in the Dark has it’s problems, but it felt like the good old B5 I stayed up watching all those years ago and didn’t get enough sleep before school. Actually, it had much of the same problems, they just seemed more obious now when the quality of TV productions is a lot higher in general than in the early 90’s.

Let’s start with the format. Now, Voices in the Dark isn’t really a fish nor a bird, it’s a chimera, containing a bit of both and looking mighty odd. It’s two 45 minute episodes wrapped into one 90 minute dvd movie. There isn’t any real connection between them, exept for a thematic one, but they aren’t separated either. So if you watch this as a movie you’ll be scratching your head. Just take it as two episodes watched together.

There were entire scenes contaning nothing but exposition in dialogue, the sets were cheaper than ever and even though the CGI was done by the same company as Galactica, well, let’s just say that Energia would have delivered better quality for less cash (so JMS, if you’re reading this and not completely pissed at the LotR bashing, give us a call…).

Then again, I found it very refreshing that the two stories in the film didn’t rely on visuals or action. Instead there was a lot of long, poetic speeches and pondering between moral choises - the things that B5 did best. And unlike the rather misleading trailer lets you believe, this time there was no ancient evil threatening to drown the whole galaxy in darkness. Instead there was humor and some self-consious put-ups of certain elements of the show.

So, all in all, it was fun watching B5 again, I especially liked the ideas in the first part, consentrating on Lochley, while the second part about Sheridan felt more complete and polished. I’ll be waiting for the upcoming parts.

In Europe the DVD is released in September and for once it’s not too expensive. Play.com offers pre-order for 15.49e. At least for me that’s a price I’m willing to pay even for nostalgias’ sake. Compare that with, for example, the HD releases of original Star Trek clocking in $217 per season. Well, I guess if you have money to buy a HD player and a TV you can afford expensive box sets as well.

Finns don’t beat Norwegians too often, but one thing we have that they don’t, is a fan-made feature length Star Trek -related film, released on the Internet. Soon, even that is going to change. I just found out about the film production called Star Trek: Gatekeeper.

Inspired by Star Wreck, the Norwegian Trekkers will for the next two years prepare for the shooting of Star Trek: Gatekeeper - the summer of 2009. A cooperation between the new Norwegian group The Gatekeepers and Trekkers Norway. Here’s the synopsis:

The film takes place in the 29th century and on the biggest Starfleet station so far - The Gatekepper.

Only two years before a stationary Nexus appears just above the busy streets of Mars Central, and both people and aliens come traveling from the entire galaxy to ensure eternal life, by entering the Nexus. To avoid the catastrophe of mass suicide, Starfleets is given the task to build a space station, to guard the Nexus, and keep people away - but shortly after the station is finished an arm from the nexus is stretching toward the upper part of the station, and a number of famous personalities from Starfleets past is suddenly seen walking the station - all buried in space and divulged by the Nexus.

Cast so far:
The Station captain is played by former Trekkers Norway leader Irene Brustad, while the head of Starfleet is portrayed by the current leader Ole-Tom Ingebrigtsen. The head of the United Federation of Planets is played by the world’s most famous Trekker, Barbara Adams from Trekkies 1 & 2.

The movie is based on the largest Norwegian Trekker project so far - the biggest portal for Star Trek, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror on the Internet - a webversion of the station. The pages will be ready for presentation during the Norwegian SciFi/Fantasy Convention Warp 2008, but the forum for debating the station will be presented in a few weeks.

Closer to Christmas a portal page, presenting all the details of the station; like how to get your own private quarter, how to shop in the stores, enter the private clubs, solve all the mysteries, and so on.

Designing the page and the setting of the movie is Thomas Dahl - also creating concept matte paintings for Iron Sky as well as posters and concept MP for other US fan based Trek shows. While the 3D modeling is created by Alexander Presthus. Programmers are Martin Moen and Alexander Angeltveit. Costumes and latex effects will also be designed by Thomas Dahl, and a number of auditions will take place the summer of 2009 in Oslo. Language in both cases will be English.

Ps. The guys gave me a hint, that they might need your help. So, advanced 3D modellers and matte painters are welcome to contact the production team, as are prop makers and tailors for costumes. Portfolios is needed.

Science Fiction in Europe is not a common sight. Or is it? Just blocked a campish but interesting and production from Spain called ‘Baron Against the Demons’ - or Star Troopers, as they seem to call it also. The film is just about to be finished, and there’s been plenty of it’s trailers available already.

The synopsis says:

“In the closing stages of the 21st Century, an enigmatic superhero, called the Baron, leads the crusade that the religious organization Exorcio Deus Machine is conducting against the forces of Evil. During an extermination mission, the Baron is taken prisoner by the witch Lady Pervertvm and is tortured until she gets his sperm. Lady Pervertvm uses the Baron’s seminal fluid to fertilize the Beast-Ragnarok in order to have it engender the most powerful and ultimate race of demons. The Baron manages to escape but, blinded by his guilt, he begins a bloody Via Crucis which will start to reveal his true nature.”

We have a superhero fighting evil and a perverted lady wanting his sperm to breed a beast. We have enemies called Satan Vortex and Beast-Ragnarok. Just can’t go wrong with it! The trailers are fun with a nice retro touch and even have some pretty nice special effects, so go check them out. Not gonna beat Empire Strikes Back, but European scifi is rising, and that’s good for all of us!

AURINGONPAISTE

Vai että Danny Boyle scifileffan kimpussa? No, tämäpä mielenkiintoista. Shallow Grave on yksiä kovimpia sysimustia komedioita joihin olen törmännyt, Trainspotting erinomainen elokuva kaikilta ansioiltaan ja 28 päivää myöhemmin parhaita tsompparipätkiä aikoihin. Ja kuulemma älykäs scifi-elokuva, tämä Sunshine? Oikea silmäni puristuu hieman kiinnemmäksi, poskipään vetäessä toista suupieltä epäuskoiseen hymyyn ja niskavilloissa tuntuu epämukava kihelmöinti. Älykäs scifi, jos sellainen määritelmä nyt tässä on muodostumassa, kuulostaa paskalta.

Koetan käsitellä elokuvan nopeasti. Otetaan Alien, Event Horizon ja uusi Solaris ja sotketaan niistä pienellä ripauksella teknobabblea jotenkuten kasassa pysyvä tarina – kiitos vaan Alex Garlandille, Beach (se kirja, ei leffa) jää odottelemaan selättäjäänsä. Sitten pyydetään pirun hyvä kuvaaja ja pirun hyvä ohjaaja tekemään elokuvasta hyvä. Eihän sitä kökköä kässäriä näillä eväillä pelasteta, mutta kovasti työtä Boyle ja kumppanit tekevät. Lopputuloksena on poikkeuksellisen hyvin ohjattu, kuvattu ja miksei jopa näyteltykin tieteissössö. Paljon puhuttu älykkyys varmaan on puolen välin paremmalla puolella, kun geneerinen scifipuolijumala hössöttää jotain Taivahisen Taaton kanssa jutteluistaan. Sitten taas mennään, räjähtelee, rytisee, juostaan karkuun avaruuspuvussa ja ilman, hikoillaan, porataan ja piilotellaan. Ei mitään, mitä kentällä ei olisi ollut 80-luvulta lähtien, poislukien Boylen erinomainen ohjaus. Kiitos, mutta ei ihan riitä klassikoksi.

AURINGONLASKU

Sitä vastoin Kauko Röyhkä on erinomainen muusikko. Teenpä vielä tänä vuonna laskelmieni mukaan miljardinnen TRE-HKI-TRE –junamatkan kunniaksi parhaan Kauko Röyhkä –soittolistan. (Olin tällä kertaa Yle Teeman Kinoklubi-ohjelmassa horisemassa pehmoisia, pääsin hehkuttamaan Mulholland Driven erinomaista Diner-kohtausta (paras kohtaus ikinä missään!), marisemaan Sunshinestä ja jorisemaan kaikenlaista mistä varmaan jonakin päivänä joudun vielä tekemään tiliä. Voitte itse todistaa hölinöitäni perjantaina 27.4.07.)
